The study of differences of compliments between male and female is one of the major branches of the study of language and gender. This thesis employs sociolinguistic and sociology methods to make pilot research of the usage of compliments in modern Chinese universities in order to analyze the differences of compliments between male and female students. This thesis studies Chinese compliment and gender in detail and amplifies the whole study. The results of this study will disclose the characteristics of university community and will provide methods of improve communication and solve miss-communication.The research results show that the differences do exist when male students and female students compliment. Which in detail are that female students more often use compliments than male students, the number of male students who compliment occasionally is larger than female students, and there are more male students than female students who never compliment; male students prefer to choose ability, performance, and personality as compliment topics, while female students more often compliment other's appearance and possession than male students. As for effects, female students give more sincere compliments than male students; more female students show sincerely happy and politely happy when they receive compliments than male students. As for language style, male students prefer to use humor language than female students, and both male and female student like to compliment directly.This thesis also analyzes and discusses the causations of the difference with the theories of Chinese traditional culture and modern culture, and the theories of the different social psychology and the unique psychology of both gender while communicating with each other.
