Chinese Auspicious Language Study

Language, a symbol of culture, is the ingredients of culture itself. Cultural features of various ethnics are reflected and recorded by their language. The culture of a nation will be particularly flowery and splendid through observing his language. Generally, in the minds of Chinese people, "happy and auspicious" and "be safe with longevity" are the pursuit and desire for thousands of years. The Auspicious culture (AC) developed from it is one of the most important parts of the excellent traditional Chinese culture.AC appears with diversity to express good will, create happy atmosphere, and ask a blessing, such as mascots, numbers, color and blessing. Auspicious language (AL) is a representative expression of people's eager to safety, wealth, longevity and the joy of life. Along with the development of Cultural linguistic and folk linguistic, AL study is getting more popularity among scholars. The relationship between AL and AC is like a circle, which means the development of AL is based on the rich AC, and AC affects both the content and structure of AL, thus push the growth and deposit of AL. through the observation of the cultural traces left by actual use of AL, we can know better about the features of culture.AL possesses the very meaning to express good will to others and him as well. The existing studies focus on the description of linguistic phenomena, not on analyzing the reasons, at the same time, they are quite limited in terms of constitution method, specific category, and all- wave study with hard proof. And as time past, AL is also changing continuously, some words are not used any more, and some are well spend in modern society. Thus we need an overall portray. And this thesis try to discuss the cultural meaning, function, social meaning of AL from the perspective of interacting and inter-restricting relationship between AL and AC. It tries to prove AL is the embodiment of the desire of safety, wealth, happiness and the joy of life; to analyze the construction of form and content; to study the features of wishing, blessing, timing, inheritance; to describe the function of comforting, encouraging and entreating; in the end, to analyze the reasons of the actual use of AL from the outside and inside perspectives.
