This thesis studies the grotesqueness of the contemporary Chinese performance art, it is composed by the introduction,five chapters and the conclusion.In the introduction, the thesis firstly discusses the present research situation about the contemporary Chinese performance art, then points out the substantive characteristics of the grotesque that can make it different from other formal beauty and the research situation about grotesque in the west and in china. Finally points out the significance of the new perspective studying the grotesqueness of the contemporary Chinese performance art.In chapter one, the thesis will elaborate the grotesqueness indwelled in the form of the performance art. Part one discuss its ugly ingredient and promulgates three kinds of ugly consisted in performance art. In part two, the thesis thinks that the performance art follows one kind of counter-normalized way in its constitution, and reveals the three ways performance art used in its constitution in order to achieve deregulation.The chapter two analyzes the grotesque esthetics effect the performance art brought when entering the appreciation. The esthetic effect lies in: it can bring fearful and funny mood feeling to the people, simultaneously it makes people obtain the inquisition pleasant sensation and the revenge pleasant sensation. Here indicated that the performance art not only causes the view experience unique grotesque interest and rich their esthetic experience, but also initiates the people to reflect the negative influence brought by the contemporary china's great change.The chapter three elaborates the serious connotation hiding in its grotesquery, the thesis thinks that the artists making the performance art grotesque is their different kind choice in order to promulgate or reconsider the truth of the life. It thinks that the art contains artists'thought of a series of questions emerged in the contemporary china, such problems as the environmental pollution, the deprivation of memory about city, the prevalence of materialization, the westernization of culture, the constant change of individual status.The chapter four discusses the motive artists pursuing the grotesque effect in art, in part one the thesis discusses its artistic motive, namely is influenced by the grotesque atmosphere in the west modern art or the west post-modernistic art. The part two points out its realistic motive, the thesis thinks that the art attempts to expose and reform the reality.In chapter five, the thesis points out that the performance art in valuable, it not only has the esthetic value, but also has the cultural value. The part one discusses its esthetic value, thinking that the grotesquery of the performance art satisfies the esthetic need of specific situation, and enriches the esthetic emotion. The part two discusses its cultural value, thinking that it contains the exposition and reconsideration to the unreasonable even absurd place indwelled in the Chinese reality and people's survival condition, the art carries on and promotes the humanistic care spirit.The conclusion is the summary of the thesis, pointing out that the contemporary Chinese splendid performance art is grotesque. Although it contains ugly components, by analyzing its grotesquery in form,its grotesque esthetics effect,its serious connotation hiding in grotesquery,the motive artists pursuing the grotesque effect in art and its value, can be concluded that the contemporary Chinese performance art is positive and has artistic value. But not all of performance art in china is positive, it should move in a positive direction in future, avoiding of pursuing the strange only.
