Although many discussions have been made on artistic features of the Meiji Restorat ion by many experts at home and abroad, they are mainly focused on various categories o f the art history vertically and usually confined to the art history itself in a category. The p aper has made a comparative study on the developments and changes of major categories of art during the Meiji Restoration through art (a sub-discipline) research methods horizo ntally. A point of view has been made by this paper that artistic features of the Meiji Resto ration are a process of seeking a balance of developments in conflict among Western art, n on-Western art and traditional Japanese art, and denied the conclusion that considered so me surface phenomena like art westernization trend as its features, through analyzing vari ous aspects such as government policy, social and art thought, time characteristics, art dev elopment and inheritance features, national character and art development phenomena。...
