The thesis is titled "On the Formation and Expression Characteristics in Wuthering Heights". Based on the close reading of the novel, the thesis has studied the characteristics in the artistic form of expression by emphatically analyzing the transcendence over gothic novels and the abundant use of symbols and the original narrative techniques in Wuthering Heights. The thesis is composed of three chapters. In the first chapter "The Creative Application of the Gothic Novel", it has used the characteristics of gothic novels as a reference to analyze the creative use of the gothic genre in Emily novels. The writer Emily has put the gothic form with the intense emotion and has revealed the strong theme on human's sorrow and thirst, thus the traditional gothic theme—revenge has been transcended. The writer has depicted the unusual love beyond common people between Heathcliff and Catherine to deepen the theme of the novel. The second chapter, "The Abundant Use of Symbol in Wuthering Heights" has discussed the use of the symbol. Symbol is an artistic expression in literature since the ancient times, but in the writing, the abundant use of symbols belongs to the contemporary literature, so the use of symbols is another distinctive feature. The use of symbols has almost perfectly combined the wild and mysterious, vast natural environment with the complex, sorrowful and contradictive inner world of the characters. What is more, the writer has used many images to show the inner world of the characters. The wilderness and storm are the most typical, basic and meaningful images. The implications of these images are rich, profound and complicated. The use of symbols and the construction of the images have portrayed the characters to express the theme and develop new field in the expressive techniques of novels. The third chapter focuses on the narration of the novel. In Wuthering Heights, the writer applies a "space-time inverted, multi-angle narrative pattern". It narrates the story from different time and different angles. Meanwhile, the structure of the whole story takes on a clear dramatic feature. The multi-angle narration makes the story full of suspense and the dramatic plot makes the story soul-stirring. This kind of narration supplies a good platform for the revelation of the theme and the profound meaning of the novel. We can find that non-traditional narrative pattern is a bold innovation in English novels of that time.Based on the analysis and the discussion, the innovative writer Emily has been appeared in front of us. It is a hope that this kind of study will be more helpful to understand the literary charm of Wuthering Heights. If such effect happens, it shows that this thesis is of value.
