Research On Phoenix Pattern Of Clothing And Its Modern Application In Formalwear Design

Phoenix pattern,as an age-old traditional decorative pattern of China , once exited in various aspects of daily life in ancient China, carries the rich and varied cultural connotations. Nowadays, though the nice implication of phoenix pattern still stay in people's memory, the applications of it in cloth and other vital commodity are hard to look for. Therefore, the study of attire phoenix pattern and its modern design is particularly necessary.The research embodies four parts: the historical evolution of phoenix pattern, the cultural change in functions, the feasibility analysis of clothing phoenix patterns in modern design and it's usages in formal dress .And, this paper place emphases on the historical evolution of phoenix pattern and the cultural change in functions which offered a theoretical foundation to modern design. Furthermore, the feasibility analysis of clothing phoenix patterns in modern design creates the precondition for the practice in formalwear design.In view of this, the paper use the means that combines spot investigation and internet interview, collected abundant pictures, relevant information and documents from the libraries, museums and some database, and classified them with illustrations of pictures. Then, according to historical development, I generalized clothing phoenix patterns into four phases: the phoenix bird, the vermilion bird, phoenix and new phoenix, as well as, tried to analysis the modeling characteristics in each phase. Second, applied to esthetic rule, this paper pursued the modern aesthetic value of clothing phoenix patterns and indicated it could be borrowed to the modern fashion design. I further investigated phoenix pattern is used or applied in current different situations, the presentation of phoenix pattern in modern fashion design industry, the customers'comments or opinions to phoenix pattern. In other words, the study tells us what is the modern customer's understanding of phoenix pattern, what reasons or factors could influence their decision of purchasing phoenix pattern clothes, and what types of style they like. These could provide valuable information for the possibility of designing phoenix pattern formalwear for different social situations. The paper concludes that phoenix pattern could still be practiced in modern fashion designing and the usage of phoenix can roughly be divided into two ways: direct usage and indirect usage.
