AndréMalraux was a writer with special significance to the French literature history in the 20th century, which mainly manifested in the fact that he, as a western, paid great attention to and wrote rationally about China and Chinese major historical event. From 1927 to 1933, he created two works with the theme of the Chinese revolution, among which, "The Human Condition" enjoyed a high reputation, this novel depicted the image of China as a "cultural other" under the modern context. This paper regards "The Human Condition" as the main object of study, combines with Malraux's other creations, inspects the Malraux's image of China, explores the causes of China's image, examines the peculiarity of opposition and attraction between Chinese and western culture conveyed from Malraux's works , analyzes the Malraux's deep cultural motives which attempt to take Chinese culture as a mirror so as to reflect and salve western culture.Malraux's image of China is studied using the methods like comparative literature based on the theories like orientalism. The paper includes three parts: The first part shows the image of China and Chinese people under the modern context, and defines the China's image as the"Culture other"under the ideology through pectination and analysis about the western image of China from Marco Polo times, and then presents the China who has numerous conflicts and is decadent and disoriented under the context of the special times, and the Chinese people who are lonely absurd under the strong impact of western culture. The second part focuses on exploring the causes of Malraux's image of China. Legendary revolutionary experience and deep thinking habits have created a Malraux with special cultural identity, and then Malraux can observe and describe China as a left-leaning politician and a aesthetic artist,so as to realize the personalized expression as the body of creation. The third part contains the full excavation works about the collision of Chinese and western cultural heterogeneity. In the discourse structure of binary opposition between Chinese and western culture, Malraux makes the China become a symbol of stagnation and slavery, but makes the West bear the represent of progress and freedom. At the same time, Chinese and Western cultures with different characteristics also have experienced the two-way process of temptations, the tilt fromindividualism to collectivism and the interaction between the Chinese "Qi" and the western action of philosophy are the evidences provided by Malraux to integrate Chinese and Western cultures. Malraux has attempted to seek the"effective prescription"in the cultural collision to rescue the western social crisis, but he can not get rid of the inherent national superiority, so his works are still with the Orientalism color like Said said, and his reflection and salvation about western culture are also under the arrogant attitude. Although Malraux's reflection and salvation are not complete, but his attitude of listening and dialogue to the Chinese culture should be affirmed. The paper attempts to make a in-depth study of Malraux's image of China in"The human condition"under the cross-cultural context through the full display, exploration of the causes and the depth analysis. And then the paper reveals the Malraux's psychological motivation, national character, object of desire and cultural aspirations as the body of creation reflected from the process of writing China. The paper examines the western image of China in the dynamic structure of Malraux's self-doubt, self-legitimization and self-criticism, and analyzes the process and methods that China's image participates in the building of the western modernity experience, and then establishes the relationship between"self"and"other"in the two-way interaction between Chinese and western cultures and seeks the convergence and balance. |
