David Herbert Lawrence (1885--1930), is a prominent English novelist of the early 20th century in world literature. He is also a prolific writer of poetry,novels,plays,essays,and criticisms. He is well- known for his deep research on man-and-woman relationship His works touch upon the sensitive topic-"sex", which were banned by the British government. However, the theme of Lawrence's works is sex, but not pornography. His works reveal Lawrence's healthy and realistic views on marriage and love, which are even shared and appreciated by the readers all over the world nowadays.Lawrence states that the machinery civilization represses and distorts human nature, and destroys the integrality of mankind. The repression and distortion make mankind stay in a state of abruption and atrophy, physically and spiritually. Only when we establish harmonious sexual relationship, can we save the civilization and humanity destroyed by industrial revolution. So, how to maintain the integrity of people, how to maintain the harmony and unity between body and soul of man and woman,and the pursuit of the healthy sexual relationship and the probe into the ideal marriage all very naturally become Lawrence's focus in his writing. Accordingly, we can say that Lawrence's view on marriage is the core of his thought, which is fully embodied in his typical masterpiece Women in Love.The thesis attempts to explore Lawrence's views on marriage on the basis of a close and speculative reading of his representative novel Women in Love. With the exception of introduction and conclusion, this paper consists of three parts.The first chapter introduces Lawrence's views on marriage from physical communication of man and woman in marriage. Lawrence explores the relationship between men and women deeply and successfully. He believes that the combination of man and woman's body is human instinct and the need for reproducing. Sex is the key point of the harmonious combination of man and woman; it is the sublimation of sex and love; it is the unity of secular and sacred love and harmony of body and soul. The work shows the importance of physical attraction and combination through the two couples'mutual attraction and the desire for sex. The second chapter focuses on Lawrence's view on marriage from the aspect of spiritual communication between men and women in marriage. Lawrence points out the necessity of the combination of two souls and the essence of marriage. In the description of the contradictions of destructive relationship between Gerald and Gudrun, and the creative relationship between Birkin and Ursula. The work reveals the importance of spiritual communication in marriage under the background of the strangulation of humanity by modern industrial civilization.The third chapter emphasizes the essence of marriage in Women in Love from the aspect of the integration and individual independence of men and women in marriage. Men and women can achieve a perfect and balanced relationship through unremitting efforts, in balanced harmonious sexual relationship, love needs independent space and freedom, love needs equality, rebirth from marriage. Through the differences, conflicts,adjustment to the final harmonious and balanced marital relation between Birkin and Ursual in love and marriage, the best mode of keeping harmonious sexual relationship is eatablished under the background of modern industry. In marital relation, men and women should be not only integrated but also have mutual independence. The two are supplementary and achieve a balanced state. Only in this way can the marriage achieve a perfect union.All in all, Women in Love is a masterpiece of discussing perfect sexual relationship. He states that there are three elements in perfect marriage. One is the physical communication; the other is spiritual communication; the more important one is the combination of integration and individual independence. Birkin and Ursula represent the ideal marriage between men and women of Lawrence. Meanwhile Lawrence tries to find the best way to maintain a perfect relationship between men and women in capitalist society based on balanced harmonious marriage.
