On Economy Of Language In English Business News

The language of news English is interesting and easy to understand. It is concise and refined so that much information is delivered by least words. As a branch of news English, English business news has its own linguistic features which embody the economy of language. Within the theoretical framework of economy principle in linguistics and the strategy of optimal distribution of language resources, the present study analyzes textual cohesive devices and linguistic features of English business news and sees the providing and interpreting of information of news as a communicative process between the writer and the reader. Further, this thesis discusses how to realize the maximum of linguistic utility with least input of language during the process.The project of present study is carried out from the following aspects:1) to collect 20 samples of English business news from The Economist; 2) to analyze textual cohesive devices and linguistic features of those collected English business news samples to find out how the economy of language is realized in them; 3) to discuss the innate mechanism of English business news writing under the guidance of economy principle in linguistics; 4) to discuss the strategy and skills of acquiring information based on the economy principle in linguistics by which the news is written.Based on the quantitative analysis of cohesive devices and linguistic features of those 20 collected English business news samples, the paper explores how the cohesive devices used and linguistic features manifested reflect the economy of language and how the function of economy principle in turn guides the optimal distribution of language resources to maximize utility. Given the fact that the economy principle in linguistics is examined mostly at the levels of sound, lexicon, grammar and pragmatics and seldom at the textual level because the project of textual analysis, involving and synthesizing numerous related concepts and theories, is complex, the paper looks at the function of economy principle at the textual level in terms of cohesive devices, for cohesion is, as it were, a short cut, by which the reader can comprehend the text with relative ease. Besides, three linguistic features are characteristic of the business news:1) the use of business terminology; 2) the use of metaphorical expressions; 3) the use of such mathematical devices as figures, graphs and tables, all of which effectively illustrate the function of the economy principle. Also, looking respectively at the role and functioning of the writer and the reader, the thesis defines the relationship between them as a process of communicative interaction in ways of both sending and extracting information within the framework of economy principle. The findings generated by such an analysis include some key factors and skills for news writing and news information extraction.This thesis is expected to cast some light on the teaching and learning of English business news reading and writing by offering further illustration of textual construction and linguistic features by making the analysis of communicative relationship between the news reader and writer. Moreover, this thesis is expected to guide students in comprehending and writing English business news in the light of the concept that language resources should be optimally distributed to maximize the utility.
