As a comparatively new teaching theory in the last two decades, Content-based Instruction (CBI) has been considered to be useful in teaching English as a foreign/second language, and many studies in America have confirmed that the application of CBI can help the students to develop their language skills as well as get access to professional knowledge through the contents. As the main task for English teachers, the exploration of teaching methods has also been emphasized in China, where the CBI has aroused a lot of interest. However, there is no enough study and research about it except for some bilingual education. In the teaching area of ESP (English for Specific Purposes), there are many problems, therefore, more improvements are needed in China. The appearance of CBI has just shed lights on ESP. At home and abroad, CBI is proved to enhance the students'English learning and special knowledge, but there aren't too many teachers who have applied this method to their daily teaching. This thesis is written to study the effect of CBI on the students in ESP class in Jilin Medical College, where CBI seems to play an important part. And as a combination of ESP teaching in medicine and CBI, which stands for the application of this teaching method, the thesis tries to find ways to make full use of the CBI in Medical English teaching and also study the advantages and disadvantages of CBI in ESP teaching.Under the guidance of Krashen's Input Theory, Cooperative Language Learning Theory, and Cognitive Learning Theory, the writer has designed the experiments, which are conducted in ESP classroom in Jilin Medical College, and the results are analyzed. The study has some limitations, but the writer hopes it can help us to improve Medical English teaching in China to some degree, and looks forward to the further application and study on CBI by the other teachers in the future.
