Objective:To investigate efficiency and security in the treatment of acute optic neuritis,we conducted a meta-analysis of randomized controlled clinical trials on methyprednisolone and placebo for acute optic neuritis. Methods:The literature search, study selection and assessment, data collection and analysis were undertaken by two reviewers according to the Cochrane Handbook for Systematic Reviews of Interventions. Of the 3 trials comparing methyprednisolone and placebo were selected for this review. Result:Three studies involving 433 patients were included. The IVMP regiment was superior to the placebo regiment at early times. But the groups were no significant difference at six months. Conclusion:IVMP is therefore effective in accelerating short-term recovery in patients with acute optic neuritis. Whether IVMP are also effective in reducing the risk of relapse, and the optimal dose and length of treatment must still be determined.
