BackgroundThe new medical model: biological-psychological-social medical model is more emphasis on which psychological and physicological are interrelated system. However , International Prostate Symptom Score(IPSS) used to assess symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) patients and Quality of Life Score(QOL) used to assess quality of life neglecte the psychology actually. In recent years, it was reported that the anxiety symptoms of BPH patients were serious than normal and it can improve quality of life of patients through psychological intervention and community intervention methods.Objective1,To investigate the IPSS score, QOL score, and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale Score(SAS)of BPH patients.2,To analysis the relationship between anxiety symptoms and benign prostatic hyperplasia symptoms. Methods1,Eligible criteria and exclusion criteria of research object: (1) The patients were diagnosed as benign prostatic hyperplasia , hospitalized in the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University during November 2009 to February 2010; (2)The patients were the initial diagnosis of benign prostatic hyperplasia and hospitalization for surgical treatment; (3) The patients were the primary educational level or above, can cooperate with the investigation, and were able to complete the SAS score, IPSS score and QOL score; (4) To exclude the patients older than 75 years, and subjected negative life events recent.2,To investigate the IPSS score, QOL score and SAS score of patients on admission through answer papers.3,Statistical analysis of the results of the scores: (1)all cases were divided into two group, one group with other diseases and the other without other diseases, the SAS cores were compared between two groups, and the SAS cores were compared between two groups with 275 cases[1] who were older, healthy and male; (2) In accordance with the degree of Prostate Symptom, the group without other diseases was divided into mild and moderate groups (IPSS: 0 ~ 19 points) and severe group (IPSS: 20 ~ 35 points), and the SAS cores were compared between two groups; (3) In accordance with the degree of anxiety, all the patients were divided into normal group (SAS≤40 points) and anxiety group (SAS>40 points), and the IPSS scores and QOL scores were compared between two groups.Result1,A total of 86 patients meeting the conditions with the SAS score mean 41.10±5.50, was collected. The group without other diseases had 56 cases, with the SAS score mean 39.79±5.01,and the group with other diseases had 30 cases, with the SAS score mean 43.57±5.60. The difference of the SAS scores between two groups was significantly(P<0.01). And the SAS core mean 38.32±6.56[1] of whom was older, healthy and male, which was compared with the SAS scores of two groups, The difference was significantly(P<0.05).2,The mild and moderate groups (IPSS: 0 ~ 19 points) had 20 cases, with the SAS scores mean 37.55±5.40.The severe group (IPSS: 20 ~ 35 points) had 36 cases, with the SAS scores mean 41.03±4.39. The difference of the SAS scores between two groups was significantly(P<0.05).3,The normal group (SAS≤40 points) had 41 cases ,with the IPSS scores mean 20.63±7.47.The anxiety group (SAS>40 points) had 45 cases, with the IPSS scores mean 25.07±6.38. The difference of the IPSS scores between two groups was significantly(P<0.05). In the anxiety group, the QOL score of 0 to 2 points with 0 case, 3 points with 2 cases, 4 points with 6 cases, 5 points with 23 cases, 6 points with 14 cases, and in the normal group, the QOL score of 0 to 2 points with 0 case, 3 points with 4 cases, 4 points with 9 cases, 5 points with 22 cases, 6 points with 6 cases, the differences of QOL scores between two groups divided into by SAS, were statistically significant.Conclusions1,The SAS score of BPH patients is higher than the older who are male and healthy, especially the BPH patinets with other diseases.2,The difference of the SAS scores was significantly(P<0.05)between The mild and moderate groups (IPSS: 0 ~ 19 points) and The severe group (IPSS: 20 ~ 35 points),which indicates the extent of prostate symptoms may increase the degree of anxiety.3,The difference of the IPSS and QOL scores was significantly(P<0.05) between the anxiety group (SAS>40 points) and The normal group (SAS≤40 points),which indicates it the anxiety symptoms can aggravate the prostate symptoms, and affect quality of life.4,Therefore, we believe that the diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia patients should be concerned about mental health and it is necessary through psychological intervention to improve QOL of patients who are anxiety.
