Artificial radiation has been widely applied in medicine, health, energy, technology and other fields, but the harm to the environment attracts people's attention. At present, the research of radiation protectants which toxic side effects, practical and Inexpensive has become hotspot. Gingerol as a extract of ginger has ability of antioxidant and free radical scavenging, antitumor and immune enhancement. More and more attention has been focus on the role of ginger on production and research.Seventy-two female Kunming mices with age of 6-8 weeks and bodyweight of 25-32 g were selected, and were randomly assigned to 12 groups (Group 1; 2; 3; ....12; respectively) of six animals per tremeant as described below. Based on bodyweight of animals, the group 1; 2; 3;......6 were adminstreated with Omg/kg (ck), 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg,400mg/kg,800mg/kg and 1600mg/kg dose of gingerol for continous 5 days, respectively; Group 6; 7;....12 were adminstreated with Omg/kg (ck-R), 100mg/kg, 200mg/kg,400mg/kg,800mg/kg and 1600mg/kg dose of gingerol for continous 5 days, respectively; and radiated by 5 Gy gamma ray (60Co-y) at the day 6. All animas were killed and blood samples were collected for determinationof activity of SOD, CAT, and GSH-PX and contents of MDA. Results obtained were as follows:1. Different dose of gingerol can enhance the antioxidant capacity of mice as the showed in the four antioxidant indicators; 100-800mg/kg dose treatment, the oxidation resistance gingerol with the increase of dose, antioxidant capacity of 800mg/kg treatment group enhanced significantly compared to other treatment groups,1600mg/kg treatment group declined slightly.2.With 60Co-y ray irradiation, four antioxidant index of gingerol group was higher than irradiation CK-R group which indicate that gingerol has a protective effects against radiation injury in mice.3. Gingerol has different influence on different antioxidant enzymes. SOD activity enhanced significantly with different dose of gingerol which indicated that gingerol may promote the upper systemagainst oxidative stress response more effective than the downstream; CAT enzyme which downstream of SOD enhanced with different dose of gingerol;on the activity of GSH-PX was mini-mum; MDA contents were significantly different between different treatment4.According to the antioxidant activity camparison with radiation exposure CK group and CK-R group indicated that, at the range of 400mg/kg-1600mg/kg gingerol could significantly increase antioxidant and protective ability against radiation damage caused by Gamma ray of mice. The results demonstrate that antioxidant and radioprotective effects depends on doses of gingerol. In the doses rang of present study, gingerol show a good antioxidant and radioprotective effects at the ranges from 400-1600mg/kg. These provide basic data for the follow up study on the antioxidant and radioprotective mechanism of gingerol, as well as drug development, food additives production and utilization of gingerol.
