Objective:To compare the clinical effect of endovenous laser (EVLT) and conventional operation (high ligation and desquamation) to treat lower extremities varicose veins. To investigate the principle, indication and matters needing attention. We summarized the experience in order to achieve better results. Methods:Of 211 cases of lower extremities varicose veins,131 cases (209 legs)were treated by EVLT which used 940nm semiconduct and 80 cases (131 legs) treated by conventional operation from April 2003 to November 2004. All the patients were evaluated clinically and were re-examined by duplex US and PPG at 1,3 and 5 years after operation with regular follow-up. Eight factors were compared including the operating time, quantity of operative incision, postoperative pain, postoperative complications, length of stay, recurrence rate in one year, there years and five years. Results:The operating time, the quantity of operative incision, postoperative pain,, post-operation hospitalization were conspicuously lower in EVLT group (P<0.05), but the postoperative complications, recurrence rate in one year, there years and five years had no significant fifference (P>0.05).Conclusion:EVLT is a minimal invasive operation possessing safety, effectiveness and with less scar. It has the potential to replace conventional surgery and extends the surgical indications for lower extremities varicose veins treatment.
