Background: Limbs pain, paresthesia and physical dysfunction caused byperipheral neuropathy is common. The peripheral neuropathy includedneurilemmoma, neurofibroma and traumatic neuroma, etc. They were known asperipheral nerve tumors. Clinical manifestation, physical examination, MRI, CTand electromyography were the traditional inspection of peripheral neuropathy. But the traditional inspection could not find the location of diseas exactly. Theycould not make the relationship of disease and surrounding tissues clearly. Toprovide more accurate diagnostic information for determine surgical plan andpostoperative treatment make exploring new methods of imaging diagnosisbecome the current research focus.Abstract:Objective To analyze sonographic imagings and evaluate the application of high-resolution ultrasonography in diagnosis of peripheral nervetumors.MethodMethods Fifteen healthy volunteers, 20 patients with neurilemomas, 10patients with neurofibromas, and 8 patients with traumatic neuromas wereexamined before operation with high-resolution ultrasonography.Ultrasonographic findings were compared with the outcome of operation. Results The peripheral nerve appeared as tubular echogenic structure withparallel linear echoes on long axis views, and as a round echogenic structure withpunctiform echoes on transverse views. Neurilemomas were visualized as massesconnected with nerves in 20 patients, centric with nerves were in 12 cases andeccentric with nerves were in 8cases. Neurofibromas were visualized as massesconnected with nerves in 10 patients, all were centric with nerves. There was asignificant difference in eccentric. Nerves were damaged completely in 7 caseswhich were depicted with interrupture of nerve continuity and proximal traumaticneuroma, and nerves were damaged partly with partial interrupture in 1 case. Conclusion Ultrasonography can clearly show the size, location andrelationship with the adjacent nerve of peripheral nerve tumors. It is useful in thediagnosis and treatment.
