Objective:To observe the alternation of the olfactory function of eighty-five patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and polyps before and after endoscopic surgery. To confirm the influence of the disease on the olfactory function and evaluate the effect of the endoscopic surgery on the recovery of the olfactory function. We specially researched whether the middle turbinectomy affect the recovery of the olfactory function. Methods:All the patients underwent functional endoscopic sinus surgery(FESS).The olfactory function of the eighty-five patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps was tested through the T and T olfactory testing method before operation and three months after surgery. The results were analyzed.Results:①Among all the eighty-five patients, there were seven,six,five,twelve,sixteen,fifteen,twenty-four patients respectively from I type 1 stage to III type according to Haikou criterion in 1997.72.9% patients had hyposmia, and the olfactory disorder could be differentiated as mild(15.2%), medium(10.6%)and severe(16.5%) and anosmia(30.6%).②The complaint of hyposmia was not coincident with the test. The rate of inconsistency was 52.1%,69.2%,88.9%,50.0%,50.0% respectively fromⅠtype 1 stage toⅢtype.③According to the computed tomography(CT) of the nasal sinuses and the endoscopic examination, there were thirty-eight patients who had the block of the olfactory cleft with thirty-six patients didn't. Whether the olfactory cleft was obstructed had a significant difference on olfactory disorder(P<0.01).④During a follow-up of 3 months to 1 year, all the patients were cured without recurrence and complications. When tested 3 months after surgery,70.5% patients had a better olfactory sensation. The improvement rate was 100.0%,100.0%,80.0%,71.4%,80.0%,61.5% respectively fromⅠtype 1 stage toⅢtype.⑤Whether the patient underwent middle turbinectomy had a significant difference on the recovery of olfactory sensation.Conclusions:①Patients with chronic rhinosinusitis and nasal polyps had some degree olfactory disorder. The serverity was aggravated with the severity of the disease.②There were a little difference between the complaint and the test of the olfactory disorder. The rate of inconsistency was 57.7%.③Whether the olfactory cleft was obstructed had a significant difference on olfactory disorder, which will play an important role in guiding therapy.④Olfactory function of 70.5% patients was significantly improved 3 months after endoscopic surgery.⑤Middle turbinectomy had an influence on the recovery of the olfactory sensation.
