Part 1 Visualization of cranial nerves III~VI In cisternal segments employing CE 3D FIESTA MR sequenceObjective: To evaluate the sensitivity of CE 3D-FIESTA (contrast enhanced three-dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition) sequence and MPR(multiple planar reformat)technique for the visualization of cranial nerves (CNs)III-VI and their neurovascular relationships in cistern. Methods: Fifteen patients without cranial dysfunction underwent CE 3D-FIESTA MR sequence. Original data acquired was reconstructed in oblique sagittal or coronal in GE workstation with MPR technique according to the courses of cranial nerves. Two radiologists evaluated independently the cranial nerves (CN) and their neurovascular relationships in cisternal segment. Results: The rates for visualization of CN III,CN VI,CN V and its branches were 100%(30/30)on the images by employing CE 3D-FIESTA sequence and MPR technique. CN IV was partly visualized in a rate of 80%(20/30).Conclusion: Most nerves of CN III-VI can be clearly Visualized using MR CE 3D-FIESTA sequence. The neurovascular relationships between CN III-VI and basilar artery (BA), posterior cerebral artery (PCA), superior cerebellar artery (SCA), Posterior communicating artery (PCoA)MPR technique were observed from successive multiplanar reconstruction MPR images. Part 2 Visualization of CNs III~VI in Their Cavernous Sinus Segments Employing CE 3D FIESTA MR sequence. Objective:To evaluate the sensitivity of CE 3D FIESTA (contrast enhanced three-dimensional fast imaging employing steady-state acquisition) sequence and MPR(multiple planar reformat) technique for the visualization of cranial nerves (CNs) III-VI in CS (cavernous sinus). Methods: Fifteen patients without cranial dysfunction underwent CE 3D FIESTA MR sequence. Original data acquired was reconstructed in oblique sagittal or coronal in GE workstation with MPR techniques according to cranial nerves. Two radiologists evaluated independently the cranial nerves (CN) in CS segment. Results: The rates for visualization of CN III was 100%(30/30)on the images by employing CE 3D-FIESTA sequence and MPR technique. The visualization of CN V1 and CN VI were detected in 63%(19/30) and 60%(18/30) respectively. CN IV was partly visualized in a rate of 47%(14/30).Conclusion: Most nerves of CN III-VI in cavernous sinus could be visualized using MR CE 3D FIESTA sequence. CE 3D FIESTA MR sequence might be a valuable tool for the assesment of dislocation of CNs III-VI in their courses resulted from cavernous sinus involvement with successive MPR (multi-planar reconstruction) images.
