Blackground The durable polymer sirolimus-eluting stents(Cypher Stent) had been proved safe and effective by several clinical trials. There were also some studies about safety and efficacy of biodegradable sirolimus-eluting stent (Excel Stent). But there were limited contrast studies between biodegradable Excel Stents and durable polymer Cypher Stents. Objective To compare the safety and efficacy of Excel Stents and Cypher Stents in treating coronary artery disease in real world. Methods This is a retrospective control study in one centre. The study followed-up 230 patients with CAD treated with Excel Stent and 161 CAD patients treated with Cypher Stent From January 2007 to April 2008 and analyzed the 12-monthes follow-up results by comparing the success rate of operation, major adverse cardiac event(MACE,cardiac death, repeat angina pectoris and myocardial infarction, target vessel revascularization) and stent thrombosis. Results Two groups were similar in main baseline clinical data and major angiography characteristics. The success rate of operation was 99.6% in Excel group and 99.4% in Cypher group and there was no significant statistical difference(P>0.05). In one year there were 13 patients occurred in MACE, and in which 1 patient underwent target vessel revascularization in Excel group(CABG), then there were 6 patients occurred in MACE and 1 patient occurred in cardiac death in Cypher groud. The incidence of MACE in one-year follow-up was 5.8% in Excel group and 4.6% in Cypher group. There was no significant statistical difference (P>0.05).The rate of target vessel revascularization was 0.4% in Excel group and 0.7% in Cypher group, there was no significant statistical difference(P>0.05).Stent thrombosis occurred in 1 patient (0.7%) in Cypher group and 0 patient (0%) in Excel group. Then there was no significant statistical difference(P>0.05).Conclusion Implantation of the Excel Stent in patients with coronary artery disease is safe and effective, and without obvious difference compared to the Cypher Stent in one-year follow-up outcome.
