Objective:To analyze the advantages of measuring and observing the maxillary bone using 64-slice spiral computed tomography and to demonstrate the variation in distortion rate between ortho-Pan tomography (OP) and 64-slice spiral computed tomography (64SSCT).Materials and methods:In 15 maxillary bones, a series of parameters concerning available bone were measured among the bone itself, the panoramic and the 64SSCT images. Analyze the differences in distortion rate between OP and 64SSCT. The configuration of maxillary sinus and labial maxillary bone in anterior teeth were observed in the 64SSCT three-dimensional images. Results:All 15 cases can show the configuration of the maxillary sinus and labial maxillary bone in anterior teeth area using 64SSCT three-dimensional images clearly. We measured the height of the alveolar bone in anterior teeth on both OP and 64SSCT images, which somewhat distorted images, OP (2.78±0.56%)>64SSCT (0.55±0.20%). Differences of distortion rate between the 2 radiological methods were statistically significant (P<0.05). The distortion rate of 64SSCT when measured the height of the maxillary bone among central incisor area, lateral incisor area and canine area were 0.61±0.29%,0.53±0.20%,0.55±0.15%. The distortion rate of OP when measured the height of the maxillary bone among central incisor area, lateral incisor area and canine area were 2.65±0.73%,2.78±0.44%,2.83±0.58%. We can measure the width of the alveolar bone in edentulous areas precisely. The minimum of the ABW values from the top of the alveolar crest to the maxillary sinus floor or the basis nasi can assist the dentist make the decision for the diameter of the dental implant. The distortion rate of 64SSCT when it measured the width of the maxillary bone among anterior teeth area, premolar teeth area and molar teeth area were 2.22±0.94%,2.21±0.72%,2.30±0.84%. Statistical analysis with t-test of variance showed no significant disagreement for the 64SSCT measurement between 2 different areas. But there were significant differences for the measurements between the height of Omm and the height of 5,10mm (P<0.05).Conclusions:64SSCT three-dimensional images can show the configuration of the maxillary sinus and labial maxillary bone in anterior teeth area clearly while OP can't. The panoramic images underestimate the ABH values when compared with DM values while the ABH values measured by the 64SSCT images were almost the same as the DM values. The 64SSCT can measure the width of the alveolar bone in edentulous areas precisely. With the ABW values from the top of the alveolar crest to the maxillary sinus floor or the basis nasi the dentist can make the decision for the diameter of the dental implant.
