Selaginella braunii Baker is a a number of genus Selaginella, family Selaginellaceae and distributed in most south part of Yangtze River. The whole plant of S. braunii Baker has been used as a folk medicine for the antiphlogistic, detoxicating, heat-clearing, and cough-relieving treatments. However there, research on its chemical constituents and its phamarcological actictives has not been reported in and abroad. With the purpose of elucidating the active chemical constituents of S. braunii Baker and developing the natural resources of genus Selaginella, the ethanol extract of S. braunii Baker was investigated by using modern chromatographic methods, as a result, fourteen compounds, including two 5-carboxymethoxylapigenins, two apigenin-C-glycosides, two biflavonoids and six anthraquinones, were obtained. On the basis of the physicochemical and spectroscopic properties (UV, IR,'H-NMR, 13C-NMR,2D-NMR, ESI-MS), those structures were identified as: 4'-hydroxy-5-carboxymethylflavonoid-7-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), (2E)-4,2',4'-trihydroxychalcone (2), apingenin 6-C-β-D-glucopyranosyl-8-α-L-arabinopyranoside (3), apingenin 6,8-di-C-β-D-glucopyranosyl-8-α-L-arabinopyranoside (4), (5,7,5",7",4'"-pentahydroxy-4'-methoxy-[3'-8"]-biflavonoid (5), Amentoflavone (6),1,3,8-trihydroxy-3-methylanthraquinone (7),1,8-dihydroxy-3-methyl anthraquinone (8),1,8-dihydroxy-3-methoxy-6-methylanthraquinone (9),1,3,8-trimethoxy-6- hydroxymethylanthraquinone (10),7,4'-dihydroxy-5-carboxymethyl flavonoid (11), Physcion-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (12), Emodin-8-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (13), and (3-sitosterol (14).Among the above, compound 11 was a new compound, and compounds 4,5,10 were isolated from genus Selaginella for the first time.
