Objective To investigate the clinical results of total hip arthroplasty (THA) for Crowe type-Ⅳdevelopmental dysplasia of hip in adults. Methods A consecutive series of 23 THAs were performed for Crowe type-Ⅳdevelopmental dysplasia of hip in 17 patients. The mean age of the patients at the time of surgery was (45.04±9.91) years,There were 10 females and 7 males. Before the operation, the mean amount of leg lengthening was (4.82±0.95)cm. Each patient was evaluated clinically and by radiographs before the operation and during the follow- up period, according to the Harris hip score (HHS). Result 17 patients were followed from 7 months to 7 years (average 4 years),except for sciatic nerve impairment occurred in one case, and recovered 6 months later. The mean preoperative HHS was 38.00±6.47 compared with the postoperative HHS of 89.60±7.61(P﹤0.05).The mean amount of postoperative leg lengthening was (4.45±0.88)cm. Conclusions The approach of THA is a safe and effective procedure for Crowe type-Ⅳdevelopmental dysplasia of hip in adults.
