Objective To study the cerebral artery lesions and vascular risk factors in patients with leukoaraiosis (LA) by magnetic resonance angiography (MRA).Methods Sixty-one patients with LA were detected by MRI as LA group and 44 old people without LA as control group were enrolled.A1l the Patients undergone MRA. Sex ,age, education ,the history of hypertension, diabetes, cerebral vascular disease(CVD),smoking, alcohol consumption and family history of CVD were investigated. Vascular risk factors of blood pressure, electrocardiogram, fasting glucose, triglycerides (TG), serum total cholesterol (TCH), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), fibrinogen(Fib)and body mass index(BMI )were also collected. The both groups were tested in neuropsychological by mini-mental state examination (MMSE) .Apply univariate method and logistic regression to analyze the association between leukoaraiosis, cerebral artery lesions and vascular risk factors. Results Compared with control group, elder age and MMSE scores of LA group had significant differences (P<0.001). No significant differences in sex and BMI(P>0.05).LA group had more lesions of cerebral mixed circulation (P<0.01). Vascular abnormality rate, the number of vascular lesions , the lesion of anterior and posterior circulation had no statistically significant difference(P>0.05).There were significant differences in systolic blood pressure and hypertension history between two groups (P<0.05), while no significant differences in smoking history, alcohol history, diabetes history,CVD history TG, TCH, HDL-CH,LDL-CH,Fib,electrocardiogram and family history of CVD (P>0.05). The logistic regression analysis showed that the lesions of mixed cerebral circulation(OR=5.663, 95 % CI:1.511-21.220, P=0.01), hypertension history(OR=3.609, 95 % CI:1.155-11.279, P=0.027) and elder age(OR=1.085, 95%CI:1.026-1.149, P=0.005) entered the regression equation and they had significantly influence(P<0.05).These factors independently associated with LA. The lesions of mixed cerebral circulation had the closest relationship to LA(OR=5.663,P=0.010). Hypertension history and elder age were also related to LA (P<0.05). Systolic blood pressure was not independently associated with LA (P>0.05).Conclusions The lesions of cerebral mixed circulation, hypertension history and elder age are independently related to leukoaraiosis. Cognitive impairment is related to LA.
