ObjectivesTo observe the clinical outcome of Chinese traditional medicine treatment for degenerative lumbar spinal disease. To discuss approach of keeping height of interbody, promoting fusion and improving the curative effect.MethodsA retrospectie study on 58 patients with degenerative lumbar spinal disease from The First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine from Apr.2009 to Oct.2010,each with a complete information and accorded with both of the inclusive criteria and the excluded criteria. All of the 58 inpatients were randomly divided into treatment and control groups. All the patients of two groups received treatment with Posterior lumbar interbody fusion. While the patients in the treatment group can take Chinese medicine after operation therapy with syndrome differentiation, taking Chinese medicine("Xian Ling Gu Bao" capsules)after leave hospital.(1)To observe height of interbody in preoperation, postoperation after a wee,3 months and 6months. (2) The fusion rates of two groups were recorded respectively in 3,6 month after surgery. (3)The total score of the patients'symptoms and signs in the two groups were recorded respectively before and after operation 6 month by Oswestry disability index with low back pain score sheet. To calculate improving efficacy rate as the general evaluation standards.Result(1) The height of interbody of patients was measured in two groups before surgery had no significant difference by t-test(P>0.05), showing that there was comparison between them in height interbody. The height of interbody in the two groups were compared and tested separately at a week,3 and 6 months after operation, suggesting that height of interbody in the two groups in the time period of 6 months after surgery had significant difference by t-test (P<0.05). (2) All the patients received X-ray examination and the fusion rates of two groups were recorded respectively in 3,6 month after surgery. In the treatment group the fusion rate was 53.57%(15/28).92.86%(26/28) in 3 and 6 month after operation; In the control group the fusion rate was 43.33% (13/30),70.00%(21/30) in 3 and 6 month after operation. The statistical test showed that the two groups in 6 month after surgery had a number of significant differences(P<0.05). The number of fusion patients in the treatment group was more than the control group, showed that the fusion time of treatment group was faster than the control group. (3) The rate of improvement of two groups patients in 6 month after operation had significant difference(P<0.05), showed that the clinical effect of treatment group was better than the control group in 6 month after surgery.ConclusionThe application for taking traditional Chinese medicine after surgical treatment for degenerative lumbar spinal disease, which can effectively keep the height of interbody in perioperatie and improve the fusion rate in the short term (3-6 month after surgery) and show advantage of the combined treatment of Chinese and Western Medicine.
