All of them filled out the general information to Romeâ…¢criteria questionnaire-based IBS symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms related quality of life assessment questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the recent Life events assessment scale, including lactose and other components of the food frequency questionnaire survey, by using face to face questionnaire. All the data was analyzed statistically if possible.Chi-square, Student t test were used for investigating the the related risk factors between IBS and no-IBS.Results:Data were collected from 1930 cases. There were 135 patients with IBS (Romeâ…¢criteria). The total prevalence rate was 7.0%, while 6.8%(66/908) in male prevalence was, which less than 7.2%(69/887)in females (P=0.722).The incidence of IBS was significantly increased among health workers vs. overall population (11.6% vs7.0%, P= 0.034).The incidence of IBS subtypes is the same between the different sexes (P= 0.452), but in the same sex, both men and women, we have found that the the incidence of IBS-D model is higher than the other three types. There was a high prevalence of IBS in the population with anxiety or depression (respectively:15.0% VS.5.9%, p<0.000, OR= 2.807,95% CI:1.859-4.239; 10.5% VS.6.1%, p= 0.002, OR = 1.814,95% CI:1.234-2.665). On personal history, we found that daily cigarette consumption does not affect the incidence of IBS, but when drinking too much alcohol, the incidence rate was significantly higher than overall (13.4% VS.7%). The incidence of people with abdomen illness history (including chronic gastritis, ulcers, chronic diarrhea, and abdominal surgery) increased significantly compared with the general population (16.1% VS 7.0%, P= 0.000). Finally, according to the life events and gastrointestinal symptom scores related quality of life,it showed that people with IBS had more stressful events, and their gastrointestinal tract-related quality of life significantly decreased compared to no-IBS (P=0.000)Conclusion:IBS prevalence was no significant difference between gender, but experience with stressful life events, history of abdominal disease, anxiety and depression were significantly related to IBS.
