Objective:To explore the frequency of anxiety and depression among burn inpatients. To assess the socio-demographic distribution of anxiety and depression and to determine the effects of burn related factors on development of anxiety and depression.Methods:A case series aged 18 years and over was conducted at the departments of burn, three affiliated hospitals of Xiangya, for duration of 4 months commencing from September 2010 and concluded in January 2011. Self-designed general situation inventory was used to investigate socio-demographic variables and burn related variables. Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Patient Health Questionnaire Depression Module (PHQ-9) were applied to evaluate anxiety and depression of Burn inpatients.Results:184 inpatients were included in the study,120 patients (65.2%) were male and 64(34.8%) were females. Anxiety was seen amongst 46 (25.0%) patients,23 (12.5%) patients had mild,8 (4.3%) had moderate and15 (8.2%) had severe anxiety symptoms. The common symptoms of anxiety were sweaty, foreboding and restless; 41 (22.3%) patients met the criteria of major depressive disorder (MDD). The common symptoms of depression were feeling bad about yourself, sleeping problems and loss of pleasure; Non-conditional Logistic Stepwise Regression show:Female (OR=3.3),low Income level (OR=2.1) and severe burns (OR=3.9) were statistically significant factors of anxiety; Female (OR=3.2), low Income level (OR=3.2) and severe burns (OR=2.9) were statistically significant factors of depression.Conclusion:Anxiety, depression were the common mental health problems in burn inpatients.The common symptoms of anxiety were sweaty, foreboding and restless; The common symptoms of depression were feeling bad about yourself, sleeping problems and loss of pleasure. Female, low Income level, severe burns were the independent risk factors of anxiety and depression.
