ObjectiveColorectal carcinoma is one of the most common malignant neoplasm in digestive tract. In recent years, the incidence of colorectal carcinoma increased year by year. The first effective treatment method is operation. Since anaesthesia, surgical injury, open abdomen, dissipation of heat, and so on, many patients have gastrointestinal dysfunction postoperatively, such as disappearance of intestinal peristalsis, abdominal distension, dysfunction of defecation and exhaust. But the postoperative recovery of gastrointestinal function depends the rate of postoperative complications and affects patient's subjective symptom。There are many methods in Chinese Medicine to promote gastrointestinnal function recovery after colorectal carcinoma operation, Such as Acupuncture, Acupoint electrotherapy, aral Chinese drugs, enema, application with herb, massage, Point Embedding Therapy, etc. And all of these had certain curative effect. But in practice there still exist many problems:the cure rate of acupuncture is high, but the Acupoints chose depend on the doctor, and is difficult to make standardization; point-injection therapy's efficacy has great difference, different medicine has different effect; application with herb is useful, but the smell of herb is hard to bear, and is not fit for the patients with poor wound healing; moxibustion exists fire hidden danger. Since point Embedding Therapy is effectual, safe, simple, and has short course, it has a good extensive application prospect. This study is first time to investigate the effect of calgut implantation at Zusanli acupoint on gastrointestinal functional rehabilitation after colorectal cancer operation. We expect this therapy could promote postoperative recovery of gastrointestinal function, reduce the rate of postoperative complications, shorten hospitalization time, and promote postoperative recovery. And then evaluate the application value of calgut implantation at Zusanli acupoint in the Fast-Track Programme in Colorectal Surgery.MethodsFrom Mar.2010 to Mar.2011, in colorectal disease center of Guangdong hospital of TCM,62 cases who fit the inclusion criteria were selected and randomized into point embedding group and control group, with30 cases in each group. Two groups were compared with the time of nasogastric tube withdrawing, the time to the first passage of flatus, the first passage of stool, resumption of full-flow diet, the postoperative hospital stay in order to objective evaluation on the efficacy and safety of calgut implantation at Zusanli acupoint.ResultsThere was a statistical significance between the two groups in recovery time of the first bowel sound coming up, the first passage of gas by anus, the first defecation, resumption of full-flow diet and the postoperative hospital stay(P<0.05). The time of nasogastric tube withdrawing between two groups has no statistical difference (P>0.05).Conclusions(1)The recovery time of the first passage of gas by anus and the first defecation in point embedding group was shorter than control group significantly(2)The recovery time of the first bowel sound coming up in point embedding group was shorter than control group significantly(3)The recovery time of resumption of full-flow diet and the postoperative hospital stay in point embedding group was shorter than control group significantlyIn a word, according to the clinical observation, calgut implantation at Zusanli acupoint in promoting gastrointestinnal function recovery after colorectal carcinoma operation was preliminarily verified, and the conclusion has guiding significance for further research.
