BackgroundThe sixth national census in 2010 is reported that China's population of aged 60 has been over 13.26% of the total population, and population of aged 65 years is 8.87% of the total population, it means that China has entered the aging society. At the same time of human aging, osteoporosis and fracture incidence is increased year by year because of loss of bone mass, damage of bone micro-structural, reduction of bone mass and bone strength. Oeoporosis and fracture incidence has high morbidity and mortality, which affects elderly life quality and causes huge economic and social health burden. Therefore, effective prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and fractures is not only conducive to the health and life quality of elderly patients which can reduce the burden of elderly patients and their families, but also conducive to the healthy development of a harmonious society in China. Health education and health management is an effective means of improving elderly people' knowledge level of osteoporosis and fracture, in order to understand people' awareness of that and evaluate the effectiveness of health education and health management, we designs osteoporosis knowledge assessment questionnaire (OKAQ), which is based on the Chinese medicine theory of "Prevention Theory" and "Differential Treatment".This study is based on previous work, carried out a wider range of community health surveys to understand the community knowledge level on osteoporosis and fractures, it also test the questionnaire further.Objective1. Use the osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire(OKAQ) on investigate community residents in Guangzhou, which is a simple random survey to gauge the community knowledge level of osteoporosis and fractures.2. Retest evaluation of the osteoporosis knowledge questionnaire discrimination, reliability and validity, and observed the need for further amendments to the questionnaire. Improve the reliability and credibility of the questionnaire to support the health education and health management on osteoporosis and fractures.Method1. During June 2010 - January 2011, use the Osteoporosis Knowledge Assessment Questionnaire to investigate community residents in Guangzhou as a simple random survey.2. Using Excel 2003 for data input, management, SPSS 13.0 for statistical analysis.3. Retest evaluation of the osteoporosis knowledge questionnaire discrimination, reliability and validity, make an evaluation and analysis on community knowledge level of osteoporosis and fractures.4. Statistical methods:frequency questionnaire scores table statistics; non-parametric rank sum test for independent samples scores difference among gender, age, education and occupation. Kruskal-Wallis test scores differences between groups of data; Kolmogorov-Smirnov test checks homogeneity of variance test data; Use Anova test to compare different levels between two groups.Results1. A total of 1251 questionnaires were issued,879 were returned,749 were valid.2. The questionnaire scale internal consistency reliability was 0.83, the differential coefficients of the various items are between 0.24 and 0.69, the Score difference between high and low groups for each question is significant. The questionnaire'KMO value is 0.831, and the seven aspects of a single factor loading are ranged from 0.45-0.72.3. The score difference between different gender, age, education and occupation is significant. The score in diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis-related knowledge is low. Conclusions1. The reliability and validity of the questionnaire is well, which is consistent wi th the original questionnaire, and the questionnaire can closely contact with the mean of "general knowledge of osteoporosis"2.
