The rapid development of city construction, needs the corresponding scientific and reasonable hospital distribution. Applying GIS technology to estimate and optimize hospital distribution in urban area, can advance the scientificity of the research with its strong capacity of data management, simulation and analysis.First, according to the basic information, such as each administrative division of Wuhan city and its polulation, the position, level, beds of each hospital, this study built medical resources database of Wuhan city in Arcgis. Then, this study analyzed the present condition of hospital distribution in Wuhan city in terms of service area, service polulation, carrying capacity and traffic accessibility, with the spatial analysis function of GIS, such as Thiessen polygon analysis and network analysis. This study estimated present condition of hospital distribution in Wuhan city comprehensive, concluded that, hospital distribution in Wuhan city is cyclic, from city center to the 3rd ring route, the number of hospitals decreases, while the service area of each hospital enlarges. The internal area of the 2nd ring route in Hankou, the internal area of the 1 st ring route in Hanyang, the internal area of the 1st ring route in Wuchang, the area along Wuluo Street, the center of Qingshan, the Wudong area are in the good medical resources condition. However, the condition of the Guanggu area, the west area of Hanyang, the north area of Hankou are not optimistic.Afterwards, the study discussed the principles of hospital distribution optimization, simulated the condition of medical resources distribution in Wuhan city if three topclass general hospitals, Renmin Hospital of Wuhan University, Wuhan No.1 Hospital, Tongji Hospital, moved to Guanggu in Wuchang, Houhu in Hankou, Qinduankou in Hanyang. In the event, the standard deviation of service areas of topclass general hospitals would decrese. The result proved the rationality of the assumption. This study can provide relevant decision-making govonment departments support and assistance in planning the city hospitals and other public facilities, to improve the decision-making more scientific and effective, thus achieving better and efficient allocation of public resources.
