The turtle shell plays an important role in keeping turtle safe from injury. The defense mechanism of the turtle shell becomes a common focus of the biomechanics and the complex material mechanics. In this thesis, the model rebuilding and the material properties test are carried out on the whole turtle shell. The turtle shell scanning model is built with CT scanning photos using MIMICS 10.01 software. According to the shape and structure of the turtle shell, the shell model is rebuilt with Pro/Engineer Wildfire3.0 software and the model is meshed with three layers way in HyperMesh10.0 software. The micro-structure and composition of the turtle shell is analyzed with the inspiration of the FEA results obtained from the mechanical, dynamical and modal analyses of the turtle shell using ABAQUS6.10 software.The mechanical analysis results show that the stress within the shell distributes almost uniformly. The dynamical and modal analyses indicate that the turtle shell shows an excellent dynamical property. Studies show that the turtle shell has a considerable high rigidity in the area near its internal organs and most of the deformations occur far from the internal organs of the turtle shell. Therefore, the turtle is kept safe by its turtle shell. The biological structure of the turtle shell is suitable for the living requirements, offering high strength, impacting resistance and anti-vibration ability. This study provides a reference for engineers in related structural design.
