Objective:To examine the clinicopathologic features and treatment of multiple primary neoplasms in the thyroid gland. Methods:We retrospectively analyzed 19 cases of multiple primary thyroid neoplasms, including 9 cases from our hospital and 10 cases reported in the Chinese medical literature. Based on their clinicopathologic features, the patients were divided into two subtypes:â… .Two histologically different neoplasms were located unilaterally or bilaterally, separated by normal tissues.â…¡. Single tumor contained mixed types of carcinoma. Results:The patients consisted of 5 males and 14 females of 26 to 75 years old with the median age of 52 years. Among them,12 cases were Type I, including 8 cases of follicular carcinoma (FC) complicated with papillary carcinoma (PTC),2 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) with PTC,1 case of lymphoma with PTC and 1 case of intrathyroid epithelial thymoma (ITET) with PTC.7 cases were Type II, including 5 cases of mixed squamous carcinoma (SCC)-PTC and 2 cases of mixed MTC-PTC.Conclusion:Except the squamous component in the mixed SCC-PTC case, which might have derived from a squamous metaplasia in the thyroid follicular epithelium, the neoplasms in each case had different origins. Total thyroidectomy should be the standard treatment for these patients and their prognosis was determined by the more aggressive tumor components.
