Objective:to investigate the changes of matrix metalloproteinase-9(MMP-9), tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) in serum of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD) during acute exacerbation and its relationship with interleukin-2 (IL-2) and interleukin-8 (IL-8)Methods:blood samples were obtained in patients with COPD during acute exacerbation. Healthy nonsmoking volunteers were included as controls. The concentrations of MMP-9,TIMP-1,IL-2 and IL-8 in the serum were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results:the concentrations of MMP-9, TIMP-1 and IL-8 in patients with COPD during acute exacerbation were significantly higher than in the control subjects(P<0.05). The concentrations of IL-2 in patients with COPD during acute exacerbation were significantly lower than in the control subjects(P<0.05).Conclusions:this study demonstrated that COPD patients produce greater quantities of MMP-9, TIMP-1 and IL-8 than controls, lower quantities of IL-2 than controls, which may be a critical step in the pathogenesis of COPD and emphysema.
