| Background and Purposes Heterotopic Ossification (HO) is one of the common complications following Total Hip Arthroplasty(THA). The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of self-prescribed Gu Yifang (GYF) on prevention of HO after THA as compared to indomethacin.Methods Total 70 patients who met the inclusion criteria and without any exclusion criteria were selected from Foshan Hospital of TCM in Foshan City between Sep.2008 and Sep.2009 with a simple randomized controlled method, they were divided into experimental group (n= 35) and control group (n=35). The treatment group received the GYF and control group received indomethacin for the same period. Primary endpoint was the radiographic evidence of HO with Brooker classification at 6 months; Secondary endpoint was group difference in the clinical assessment with the modified Harris hip scores; third endpoints were side effects from each treatment.Results After 6 months'follow-up, according to the radiographic evidence of HO with Brooker classification, two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05); and clinical assessment with the modified Harris hip scores after 6 months follow-up, the group with the GYF was 86.7±3.57 points, While the group with indometacin got 80.6±4.43 points, two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05); after 1 week administration period, the incidence of gastrointestinal reactions in the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05), but the other complications assessment after 6 months were no significant differences between the two groups(P> 0.05).Conclusion In this study, The side effects after 6 months did not differ significantly between the two groups, while when refer to hip joint function recovery, the incidence reduction of heterotopic ossification with Brooker classification and reduction of gastrointestinal side effects, The group of the GYF was more efficacious than the indomethacin group, obviously, the GYF was a ideal way for heterotopic ossification prevention.
