Objective To determine the incidence of adrenal insufficiency(AI) after traumatic brain injury (TBI).Methods To analyses baseline cortisol levels of 48 TBI patients after 72 hours,at the same time, low-dose ACTH stimulation test was used, and record cortisol levels at 30 and 60 minutes to determine the occurrence of adrenal insufficiency(AI).Results The cortisol levels of mild, medium, severe traumatic brain injury(TBI) were 660.57±233.66nmol/l,675.46±326.1 nmol/l,and 625.05±316.6 nmol/l(p>0.05). The incidence of adrenal insufficiency(AI) were 0/8(0%),3/17(17.6%) and 10/23 (43.5%) (p<0.05).Conclusions The baseline cortisol levels after traumatic injury was unrelated to the incidence of adrenal insufficiency (AI), The incidence of adrenal insufficiency(AI) in severe traumatic brain injury was higher than others, but the baseline cortisol levels after traumatic injury was unrelated to the adrenal insufficiency(AI).
