Objective:To evaluate the proportion and reasons for readmission after pancreastico-duodenectomy, and the factors influencing readmission. Methods:patients, who had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy, excluding periopera-tive (30-day) mortality, were identified. All hospital readmissions within 1 year following pancreaticoduodenectomy were analyzed with respect to timing, location, and reason for readmission.Results:476 patients were performed PD and PBPJ reconstruction in our center for both benign and malignant conditions. Administrative data for each admission was analyzed and demonstrated that 191 (40.1%) of patients had readmission within 1 year following PD. In those malignant cases, diagnoses associated with high rates of readmission included planed treatment(39.5%), dehydration malnutrition/electrolyte disorder (10.7%), pain (8.5%),progression of disease (6.2%), infection (5.1%) and surgery-related complications (3.4%). Nearly half of patients readmitted were readmit-ed to a secondary hospital. Conclusions:These results should assist in both anticipating and facilitating postopera-tive care as well as managing patient expectations.
