Objective:This thesis studies the ancient and modern literature, discussing the nature of "tan" and "futan" are correlated with chronic inflammation.Methods:In this paper, the main research method is to make comprehensive study on the ascertained historic documents, literature review and research analysis.Results:This thesis studies intensively on chronic TCM books and literature records about "tan" and to elaborate the history of academic system of phlegm disease, including the germination, formation and development. The cause and pathogenesis of phlegm disease are summarized and classified. This paper collates massive information of TCM literature, summarizes the research of modern physicians on the nature of "tan" as well as the embodiment of "tan" in TCM and the relevant research achievement. Besides, it combines ancient and modern literature review, bringing up a hypothesis of inflammatory response linked with the nature of "tan" and creates a new idea on the nature of "tan". It also expands the application of academic phlegm disease and put forward a new thinking in the treatment of chronic inflammatory disease.
