ObjectiveThe present study aimed to compare the incidence rate of hypertension and the predictors for hypertension between Mongolian and Han populations in rural areas of China.MethodsFrom 2004 to 2006,2,6133 individuals of Mongolian and Han populations without hypertension at baseline aged≥35 years composed the cohort. From this population, a total of 4,549 Mongolians and 19,503 Han study participants were followed successfully for hypertension incidence analyses from January to June 2008.Results①The median follow-up time was 28 months and the overall follow-up rate was 92.0%.②uring follow-up,24.6% Han population and 34.5% Mongolian developed clinical hypertension, The annual incidence rates of hypertension were 14.16 per 100 person-years (95%CI,13.52 to 14.82) in Mongolian and 10.74 per 100 person-years (95%CI,10.45 to 11.03) in Han population (P<0.05).③The control rates of hypertension in Mongolian and Han were very low (1.34% vs.1.54%).④aseline age, prehypertension, overweight and obesity, and family history of hypertension were associated with developing hypertension both in Mongolian and Han, whereas Among Mongolian, additional predictors included baseline drinking (HR and 95%CI:1.128, 1.045 to 1.219). Among Han,baseline history of Lipid disorder was additionally associated with developing hypertension (HR and 95% CI:1.262,1.029 to 1.548).Conclusions The incidence rates of hypertension in Mongolian and Han populations both were high. Higher incidence rate of hypertension were found in Mongolian than that in Han. While the control rates of hypertension in Mongolian and Han were very low. The predictors for hypertension between rural Mongolian and Han populations were not exactlly the same. We should take the specific measures for the prevention and control of hypertension among Mongolian and Han populations.Urgent improvements such as stringent monitoring of hypertension should be enhanced for decreasing the incidence rate of hypertension..
