Objective To measure the skull volume, intercommissural line (AC-PC) and temporal lobe (TL) volume by head MRI scan in order to evaluate the differences in gender and 5 age groups, correlation between intercommissural line and skull volume and mean values of ordinary Han Chinese from 18 to 70 years old. Methods Head MRI scan was carried out in 300 healthy volunteers from 18 to 70 years old (mean age 44), including 150 males and 150females by multi-center cooperation in 3 large teaching hospitals of China. The volunteers were divided into 5 groups according to the age. The conventional SE sequences (T1WI, T2WI), fluid attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), magnetic resonance angiography (MRA), magnetic resonance venography (MRV), diffusion tensor imaging(DTI) were used for excluding nervous system disease and three-dimensional magnetization prepared rapid acquisition gradient echo sequence for image acquisition. The original images were reconstructed in different directions and then sent to the post-processing workstations to measure the intercommissural line, skull volume and TL volume so as to get mean value, standard deviation and confidence interval. The obtained data were compared according to gender, the different side of intercommissural line, and age. Results The mean value of intercommissural lines(AC-PC) (in median sagittal plane) was 24.462 mm and 95% confidence interval was (24.181,24.742)mm in female, while 25.291mm and (25.012,25.569) mm respectively in male. The standard deviation in male was 1.762. The mean value of skull volume was 2429124.385 mm3 and 95% confidence interval was (2387896.643,2470352.127) mm3 in female, while 2696425.759mm3 and (2653871.926,2738979.593) mm3 in male. There was significant difference in the mean values of skull volume and AC-PC between two genders, namely the mean values in female were significantly smaller than male. There was positive correlation between the AC-PC and skull volume and the Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.336. Mean value of standard volume of left TL was 97125.877mm3 and the 95% confidence interval was (94 642.260, 99609.494) mm3 in male while 95122.890mm3 and (92773.120,97472.661)mm3 in female. Mean value of standard volume of right TL was 97015.231 mm3 and the 95% confidence interval was (94259.615,98585.786) mm3 in male, while 96422.701 mm3 and (94259.615, 98585.786) mm3 in female. There was significant difference in the mean values of both left and right TL volume among different age groups, namely the value of 18-30 year age group was significantly smaller than the rest groups and of 41-50 year age group was obviously more than other four groups. Conclusion To obtain the mean value of temporal lobe (TL) volume for different gender and age groups. There was significant difference in the mean values of skull volume and AC-PC between two genders. There was positive correlation between the AC-PC and skull volume. There was significant difference in the mean values of both left and right TL volume among different age groups, namely the value of 18-30 year group was significantly smaller than the rest groups and of 41-50 year group was obviously more than other four groups.
