ObjectiveTo explore the value of DWI in the diagnosis of brain metastatic tumors.Materials and methods75 cases with brain metastatic tumors were studied from 2006 to 2008. All the patients were examined with GE signa HD 3.0T MRI system or Siemens Magnetom Sonata Maestro Class 1.5T MRI system, and the routine examination, DWI and enhancement were performed in all patients. 75 cases were divided into two groups: the diameter of lesions≤1.0cm, group A; the diameter of lesions>1.0cm, group B. We determine the diameter of the lesions based on the maximal diameter of lesions in Axial scan image. Selection criteria for cases: we can identify the primary tumor, Patients have symptoms of the brain, Enhanced scan showed multiple foci, The imaging is clear, no interference artifacts. In this study ,we regard the number showed by contrast scan as a standard of lesions. Postprocessing of the examination data was done at ADW4.0 workstation. The data were treated with spss13.0. We Compared the number of the brain metastases showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR with that showed by DWI of every group for the Wilcoxon sign rank test,α= 0.01, p<0.01 is considered statistically significant. We Compared the number of the brain metastases showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR,DWI with that showed by contrast MRI of every group for the Wilcoxon sign rank test,α= 0.01, p<0.01 is considered statistically significant.ResultsThere is no statistically significant difference between the number of the brain metastases of group A showed by DWI and that showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR (p>0.01). There is no statistically significant difference between the number of the brain metastases of group B showed by DWI and that showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR(p> 0.01). There is statistically significant difference between the number of the brain metastases of group B showed by contrast scanning and that showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR,DWI (p< 0.01). There is no statistically significant difference between the number of the brain metastases of group B showed by contrast scanning and that showed by T1WI(T1FLAIR),T2WI,T2FLAIR,DWI (p> 0.01).ConclusionThe number of the brain metastases showed by DWI and that showed by contrast scanning has no significant difference, When the lesion's diameter> 1.0cm. The number of the brain metastases showed by DWI and that showed by contrast scanning has significant difference, When the lesion's diameter≤1.0cm.
