Objective:The aim of our investigation is to discover the relationships among the changes of serum cytokines, carotid stenosis and cognitive function to provide the evidence for objective therapy to ameliorate the cognition of patients with acute cerebral infarction in clinical practice.Methods:96 inpatients with acute cerebral infarction were divided into five groups according to the degrees of carotid atherosclerosis with 40 healthy people as control group. Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE) was evaluated to reflect their cognition and detected the serum levels of IL-10,IL-1β,CRP,TNF-αand MMP-9.Results:1.The comparison of MMSE scores between experiment group and control groupCompared with the control group, the total MMSE scores of experiment groups were significantly lower than those in control group(P<0.01) exceptⅠgrade, and the more serious of carotid stenosis, the lower of MMSE score would be(P<0.01);account ability and recall ability decreased in the groups ofⅡandⅢgrade carotid atherosclerosis comparing with the control group(P<0.01),and the scores of time orientation, place orientation, account ability, memory ability, recall ability, rehearsal ability, reading power, writing ability and structural ability were significantly lower in groups ofⅣandⅤgrade carotid atherosclerosis corresponding with control group(P<0.05).2.The comparison of serum cytokines between experiment group and control groupThe level of every serum cytokine was higher than the control group(P<0.01 ),and the more serious of carotid stenosis, the higher of the serum levels of IL-1β,CRP and TNF-αwould be(P<0.05),conversely,the serum level of IL-10 would be lower(P<0.05).3.The relationship between serum cytokines and cognitive function MMSE score which was negatively correlated with the serum levels of IL-1β,CRP and TNF-αin patients with cerebral infarction(r=-0.348,r=-0.343,r=-0.454,all P<0.01 ), was positively correlated with the serum levels of IL-10.(r=0.696,P<0.01 ).Conclusion:The serum levels of IL-1β,CRP and TNF-αin patients with acute cerebral infarction increased which were positively correlated with the degrees of carotid atherosclerosis, IL-10 decreased which was negatively related to the degrees of carotid atherosclerosis. Cognitive dysfunction was related to acute cerebral infarction with carotid stenosis.
