[Objectives] To evaluate the clinical significance of chromogranin A and synaptophysin in diagnosing varies kinds of adrenal neoplasms as indicators of immunohistochemistry, through investigating the expression of chromogranin A and synaptophysin in varies kinds of adrenal neoplasms by immunohistochemistry technique.[Methods] Expression of chromogranin A and synaptophysin were evaluated by immunohistochemistry technique in 68 cases of varies kinds of adrenal neoplasms and 5 cases of normal adrenal tissues.[Results] In 5 cases of normal adrenal tissues of this group,CgA and Syn were chiefly expressed in adrenal medulla, seldom in adrenal cortex. In 68 cases of adrenal neoplasms, the rate of positive expression of CgA is 45.59%(31/68),while the rate of positive expression of Syn is 8.24%(60/68);in adrenal cortical neoplasms, the rate of positive expression of CgA is3.03%(1/33),while CgA was expresses in all adrenal medullary neoplasms;in benign pheochromocytomas, the rate of powerful positive expression of CgA is 9.09%(2/22),while the rate is 71.43%(5/7) in malignant pheochromocytomas, the disparity is significant in statistics(P< 0.05),and in benign pheochromocytomas, the rate of powerful positive expression of Syn is 4.55%(1/22),while the rate is 42.86%(3/7) in malignant pheochromocytomas, the disparity is significant in statistics(P < 0.05) ;in adrenocortical adenomas, the rate of positive expression of Syn is 87.50%(21/24),while the rate is 77.78%(7/9) in adrenocortical carcinomas, the disparity is not significant in statistics(P>0.05).[Conclusion]1. CgA is chiefly expressed in adrenalmedullary neoplasms, seldom in adrenalcortical neoplasms,it indicates that CgA can be used to definite the neoplasm is derived from adrenal medulla.2. CgA and Syn is expressed more in malignant pheochromocytoma,it indicates that the magnitude of expression of CgA and Syn can be used to discriminate benign and malignant pheochromocytomas, the sensitivity of CgA is higher than Syn,but the specificity of CgA is lower than Syn.3. The disparity of expression of Syn in normal adrenalcortical tissue and adrenalcortical neoplasms is significant in statistics,it indicates that Syn might be used to diagnose adrenalcortical neoplasms.
