Objective:To evaluate the ability of multidetector-row CT(MDCT) to grade esophageal varices and predict a risk of hemorrhage in patients with esophageal varices, with endoscopy as the reference standard.Materials and Methods:Retrospective analysis were performed in 36 patients with gastroscopy and CT images, who had been diagnosed with esophageal varices.Esophageal varices were graded both in forms and red sign at endoscopy. After image postprocessing, the maximum minor axis of the varices and the number of the varices were recorded to grade the esophageal varices at MDCT;Calibers of left gastric vein were indicated by the mean value±standard deviation.Grades of Child-Pugh and values of PLT were also recorded. The statistical analysis was performed by use of SPSS17.0.To evaluate the possibality of MDCT to grade esophageal varices and differentiate between varices at low risk and those at high risk for bleeding, with endoscopic findings and as the comparisons.Results:1.It was significant deviation between the score of MDCT and the form of the varices at endoscopy(Spearman'r=0.745,P=0.000).2.It was significant deviation between the score of MDCT and the degree of the Red sign at endoscopy(Spearman'r=0.653,P=0.000).3.It was not significant deviation between the grade of Child-Pugh and the score of MDCT(Spearman' r=0.197,P=0.249).4.It was significant deviation among different MDCT scores that calibers of left gastric vein and the value of PLT(P=0.019,0.000).Conclusions:1.MDCT has highly consistency with endoscopy in displaying the grading of esophageal varices.Use of CT esophagography allows grading of esophageal varices and differentiation between low- and high-risk varices.2.MDCT can show the number and degree of the varices, and the blood vessels, vascular drainage situation, clearly in comparision with endoscopy.3.Patients with large MDCT scores tend to have a larger caliber of left gastric vein and a higher risk hemorrhage of varices.
