Objective: to observe changes of serum level of Activin A(ACTA)and neuronspecific enolase(NSE) during cardiopulmonary bypass(CPB) and analyze the correlation between them. Methods: blood samples of twenty patients who underwent open heart surgery with CPB were collected from internal jugular vein at points as before CPB, terminate of CPB, 12 hours and 24 hours after CPB.Activin A and neuronspecific enolase were assayed accurately. In addition , the correlation between them were also analyzed. Results: A total of 20 patients were selected. Underlying diagnoses included ventricular septal defect ( VSD) (n=9), ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect (VSD&ASD) (n=6), pulmonary stenosis (PS) (n=2), tetralogy of Fallot (TOF)(n=2), atrial septal defect (ASD) (n=1).The duration of CPB is 83.20±33.55 minutes. Activin A 1evel raised after the initiation of CPB(P< 0.05). High leve1 of Activin A lasted unti1 12 hours after CPB(P< 0.05) , and decreased within 24 hours after CPB.Neuronspecific enolase 1evel raised after the initiation of CPB, high 1eve1 of neuronspecific enolase lasted unti1 12 hours after CPB(P< 0.05), and decreased within 24 hours after CPB.There was a significant correlation between the changes of Activin A and neuronspecific enolase (P< 0.05).There was a significant correlation between the changes of Activin A and the duration of CPB (P< 0.05). There was a significant correlation between the changes of neuronspecific enolase and the duration of CPB in terminate of CPB and 12h after CPB (P< 0.05). There was a significant correlation between the changes of Activin A and the lowest temperature of CPB (P< 0.05). There was a significant correlation between the changes of neuronspecific enolase and the lowest temperature of CPB in terminate of CPB and 12h after CPB (P< 0.05). Pulmonary hypertension ,gender and age have no significant effect on the changes of Activin A and neuronspecific enolase during CPB(P>0.05).Conclusion:1 Cardiopulmonary bypass is a non-physiological perfusion, which causes variance of Activin A and neuronspecific enolase.2 The correlation between the changes of Activin A and neuronspecific enolase during cardiopulmonary bypass suggests that Activin A may indicate the brain injury.
