Objective: To study the risk factors of post-transplantant diabetes mellitus(PTDM) following orthotopic liver transplantation(OLT).Method:The 81 consecutive OLTs performed from June 2001 to April 2009 were recruited in the study. They were retrospectively analyzed and the patients were divided into two groups: patients with PTDM(27cases) and those without PTDM(54 cases). Their preoperative, operative and postoperative Variables were analyzed by x2 test and retrospectively evaluated using multivariate logistic regression model to identify the significant risk factors. Results :Out of the 81 OLTs , 27(33%) developed PTDM in our department. Eighteen variables, including age, gender, weight,HBV infection, hepatic cirrhosis, hepatic cirrhosis decompensation and so on,were analyzed. The variables, included weight , hepatic cirrhosis especially hepatic cirrhosis decompensation, immunosuppressive agent, had significant difference between the two groups. The variables, including age, gender, HBV infection, had no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion:Weight, hepatic cirrhosis especially hepatic cirrhosis decompensation, immunosuppressive agent are risk factors of PTDM following OLT. PTDM is a major complication following OLTx. Surveillance for the high risk factors and earlier treatment is the key to decreasing the incidence of PTDM.
