Background:Apoptosis is an important mean of neurocyte loss after traumatic brain injury(TBI). This study is focused on the expression of c-fos on different stages after traumatic brain injury, and moreover analysis of relationship of the expression of c-fos and apoptosis after TBI.Methods:Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned randomly to TBI group and sham control group.Rats in the TBI group were subjected to severe brain injury following Feeney's method, and rats in sham control group were subjected to the same operation without brain injury. In each group animals are sacrificed 6h,24h,168h after operation.Fos and neurocyte apoptosis rate are defined by immunohistological method and TUNEL accordingly. Results:The expression of c-fos in TBI group is higher than that in sham control group 6h and 24h after operation with statistical differences, which correlates to neuron apoptosis rate positively. The expression of c-fos and neruocyte apoptosis in TBI group are lower than before but still higher than that in sham control group 168h after operation. Conclusion:The increase on expression of c-fos after TBI probably contributes to neurocyte apoptosis, and thus the intervention of this expression may decrease neurocyte apoptosis after TBI.
