Objective: To assess whether preoperative serum levels of urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA) would predict prostate cancer (PCa)presence, prognosis and metastases, investigate the clinical value of preoperative uPA in differential diagnosing prostate cancer (PCa) from benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) as well as correlations between uPA and prostate volume,Gleason score and serum PSA.Methods: We analyzed the preoperative serum uPA concentrations in 40 patients with PCa, 20 patients with BPH and 20 healthy men using ELISA method. Student t test was used to determine the statistical significance of serum uPA levels between patients with PCa and BPH as well as between patients with and without bone metastases using the SPSS12.0 soft ware. The linear correlation method was used to determine the relation between serum uPA and serum PSA,prostate volume and Gleason score. Results: The mean serum levels of uPA were significantly elevated in patients with PCa compared with patients with BPH and healthy men (P﹤0.001 ). Furthermore, the serum uPA levels in prostate cancer patients with metastasis were significantly elevated compared with those in patients without metastasis (P﹤0.05 ). There was no statistically significant correlation between serum uPA and PSA (r = 0.28081 P >0.05),prostate volume (r = -0.12289,P = >0.05)as well as Gleason score(r = 0.11119,P >0.05) in patients with PCa. Conclusions: 1. The serum level of uPA in patients with PCa were significantly higher than patients with BPH and healthy controls. 2 The over expression of serum uPA in patients with PCa are related to tumor invasion and metastasis. 3. No correlation between the serum uPA and serum PSA as well as the prostate volume and Gleason score in prostate cancer patients was observed.
