Objective To investigate the Ultrasound(US) and CT imaging appearances of preoperative thyroid lumps in order to evaluate the diagnostic value of the two modalities and to improve the diagnostic accuracy rate of thyroid lumps. Methods 302 patients with thyroid lumps underwent US and 138 were also studied by CT, their clinical data,US and CT imaging appearances were analyzed. The images of US and CT in 138 cases thyroid lumps were compared with operation and pathological results. Results 1.In 302 thyroid lump cases,259 cases of benign lumps and 43 cases of malignant lumps. There were significantly difference in showing the number, cystic lesion, shape, margin, calcification, halo around, cervical lymph nodes, the plentiful degree of color flow and the presence of thyroid capsular invasion by US (P<0.05).2.138 cases of thyroid lumps, including 120 cases of benign lumps and 18 cases of malignant lumps. There were statistic significance in showing the number, cystic lesion, shape, margin, calcification, plain halo around, cervical lymph nodes and the presence of thyroid capsular invasion by CT(P<0.05).There was no significant difference in whether the parenchymatous density of lumps were uniformity or not with enhaned CT(P>0.05).3.US and CT of 138 cases in thyroid lumps were analyzed. This study showed that US in the aspect of detecting the number and the margin of lumps was better than CT(P<0.05).CT had a much more important value in finding out the presence of thyroid capsular invasion.US and CT had similar value in detecting the calcification, halo around, cyst of lumps and the metastatic condition of lymph nodes on the neck (P>0.05).The final diagnostic rate of US in thyroid lumps was 77.5%(107/138), CT was 68.1%(94/138),there was no significant difference between the diagnostic accuracy of CT and US(P>0.05).The diagnostic accuracy rate of both US and CT in thyroid lumps was 88.4%(122/138),superior to US or CT(P<0.05).Conclusions US and CT both are able to better in diagnosis of thyroid lumps, combining US and CT may increase the diagnosis and differential diagnosis accuracy of thyroid lumps, and have important value in clinical treatment.
