| [Purpose]To study the effect of silicone hydrogel contact lens on tears,which was compared to the traditional hydrogel contact lens.[Methods]The self control experiment was conducted over thirty eyes of 30 young volunteers(spherical equivalence ranged from -1.50D to -6.00D) who wore two different contact lens for 1 month respectively.During the 1-month period after contact lens wear,clinical measures of tear film characteristics were carried out.The tear meniscus area was measured by means of the 4th generation optical coherence tomography,which combined break-up time,corneal fluorescein staining and Schirmer I test at the same time for observation.Afterwards,the subjective feeling questionnaire was used to evaluate symptoms of every wearer,including dryness, foreign body sensation,tired eyes and blurring of vision together.Each symptom accounted for 0 to 4 points according to its degree.Eventually,whole comparison was made between two contact lens concerning aspects related above.[Results]After 1-month's wear,the mean value of tear meniscus area(TMA) was measured with contact lens.TMA value was 0.0249±0.0033 for silicone hydrogel contact lens while 0.0227±0.0030 for hydrogel ones,which suggested that TMA value of hydrogel contact lens was smaller than that of silicone hydrogel ones(p＜0.05). Then break-up time,Schirmer I test and corneal fluorescein staining were performed without contact lens.The results showed that there were no significant differences between two contact lens(p＞0.05).However,the subjective feeling questionnaire outcomes indicated that marks of silicone hydrogel contact lens was 3.967±0.541, which was significant better than 7.367±0.724 of hydrogel ones(p=0.0000).[Conclusions]The subjective sensation of silicone hydrogel contact lens was more superior to that of conventional hydrogel contact lens.In addition,the effect of silicone hydrogel lens wear on tear was rather indistinctive,which showed bright future of contact lens material.
