Objective To investigate the sedative effect of electro-acupuncture stimulation and Midazolam on critically ill patients during mechanical ventilation. Methods 20 patients during mechanical ventilation were included and divided into two groups randomly.Intravenous injection of Midazolam was given to patients in group A;and to patients in group B,intravenous injection of Midazolam was given also and acupuncture at Shenting(DU24)and Yintang(EX-HN3)with needle and electroacupuncture was applied simultaneously. The speed of intravenous injection of Midazolam was controlled through micro-pump to maintain the bispectral index(BIS) between 70 and 80.Then,we observed the dose of Midazolam used, the Ramsay score, APACHE II score,MODS score, the results of hepatic function, renal function and blood gas analysis, adverse reaction of Midazolam, and so on.Results The hourly mean dose of Midazolam used within the first six hours after sedation was(0.09±0.03 ) mg/Kg in group A,and(0.05±0.01 ) mg/Kg in group B, respectively. However, there was not significant difference in BIS,Ramsay score, APACHE II score,MODS score, adverse reaction of Midazolam, and so on among the two groups.BIS measurements showed negative correlation with Ramsay scores(r= -0.82,P<0.01).Conclusion Sedation of electro-acupuncture stimulation and Midazolam can decrease the dose of Midazolam used,therefore,electro-acupuncture at Shenting and Yintang has a certain sedative effect on critically ill patients during mechanical ventilation.
