Object: To explore the mechanism of cardiovascular activity from jellyfish venoms, as well as to purify and identify the cardiovascular protein. Results and Conclusion: Tentacle-only extract, owing similar cardiovascular activity to nematocyst venom, is a potential alternative of nematocyst vnom in jellyfish cardiovascular studies. Various physicochemical and purification-associated factors showed significant influences on cardiovascular activity of tentacle-only extract from jellyfish Cyanea capillata. (2) Total cardiac failure by the decrease of myocardium contraction force by tentacle-only extract is the major cause to SD rat death, while other activities, for example haemolytic activity, play an important assistant effect. Besides cardiovascular and haemolytic activities, hepatic and muscular activities may also exsit in tentacle-only extract. (3) A 29 kD protein is the possible cardiovascular protein, which was determined by chromatography, cardiovascular monitor and SDS-PAGE.
