Objective To investigate the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF),P53,P21WAF/CIP1,and C-myc protein in hepatocellularcarcinoma (HCC)tissue and explore their correlation with prognosis of HCC.Methods Immunohistochemistry was employed to detect the protein expression of VEGF,P53,P21WAF/CIP1,and C-myc in 61 cases HCC tissue as well as 52 cases corresponding paracancerous tissues and 10 cases normal hepatic tissues.Clinical pathological features and turmor recurrence of patients after surgical resection was analyzed according to the protein expression. Results The positive rates of VEGF,P53,P21WAF/CIP1,and C-myc proteins in HCC tissues were 60.7%(37/61),39.3%(24/61),21.3%(13/61) and 39.3%(24/61), respectively. The frequencies of VEGF,P53,P21WAF/CIP1 and C-myc protein positively in corresponding paracancerous, respectively were 38.5%(20/52),0%(0/52),5.8%(3/52) and 59.6%(31/52). The four proteins could not be detected in 10 cases hepatic tissues. There was a signifcant difference in VEGF,P53,P21WAF/CIP1,and C-myc protein expression between HCC and paracancerous tissue (P<0.05). The expression of VEGF and P53 protein was significantly associated with portal vein tuomor thrombi(PVTT).KapLan-Meier curves showed the tumor recurrent time of patients with positive expression of VEGF,P53 was earlier than those with negative expression. The multivariate Cox regression analysis found that tumor cell differentiation,PVTT,protein expression of VEGF and P53 were independent risk factors and related to tumor recurrence. Conclusions The abnormal protein expresion of VEGF and P53 is closely related to prognosis of HCC.They are considered acceptable as the useful parameters of poor prognosis in patients with HCC.
